Type Locality and Naming
Along the Kuturak River, Zarafshan-Gissar mountain region. A.I. Lavrushevich in 1976 (Explanatory note to the working legend of the Zarafshan-Gissar series of sheets. Geological Management of Tajikistan. Dushanbe, 1978, p. 50). Usually described as the lower constituent part of the Arg suite, known under the name "amphiporoid layers (limestones)" (290). Stratotype in the valley of the Arg River. Lower formation in Arg Gr.
Synonym: Kuturak Suite, Кутуракская св.
Lithology and Thickness
Dark gray banded dolomites with interlayers of dolomitic limestones, quartzitic sandstones (at the bottom), with rare lenses, nodules of dark siliceous rocks. Sometimes in the upper part, a package of lighter dolomites is distinguished. Thickness 100-600m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Lies conformably on the Shing Fm and South Sumasar Fm
Upper contact
Overlain by the Kupruk Fm.
Regional extent
Zarafshan-Gissar mountain region, interfluve of the rivers Jindydary and Aksu, Chaky-Kalyan ridge. The Kuturak Fm in the interfluve of the rivers Jindydary and Aksu is present in the span of the Kuturak Horizon, and the sections of the Chaky-Kalyan ridge are traced in the volume of the upper part of the Shing and Kuturak Horizons.
